UPDATE: A PERSON has died and commuters travelling by car and bus are facing delays after a shocking two-car head-on collision closed the Story Bridge early on Friday morning.

EARLIER: BRISBANE commuters are facing traffic chaos, with all inbound lanes on Story Bridge to remain closed well into the morning rush after a two-car crash closed the road early on Friday morning.

Four people were injured after a taxi carrying passengers and a small car collided head-on about 4.45am, cutting all inbound lanes and reducing outbound traffic to one lane, according to police.

The female driver of the private sedan was trapped in the mangled car and in a critical condition when emergency services arrived at the scene, while her male passenger was found lying outside the vehicle, on the road.

The male cab driver was also trapped in a critical condition, while his male passenger sustained serious injuries.

Paramedics said the three critically injured patients were hospitalised at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital, with the male cab passenger also treated for his injuries.
