Heavy rain forces closure of Mt Isa highways

HEAVY rain has forced the closure of  major roads around Mt Isa with police warning motorists to take extra care.

Police have closed the Landsborough Highway between Cloncurry and McKinlay and the Flinders Highway between Cloncurry and Julia Creek.

Motorists should delay their travel on these highways until further notice.

Over the past few weeks, significant heavy rain has fallen in the area - this has made local waterways very full and flash flooding is likely as a result of today's rain.

Recently, there have been several people rescued from vehicles that have attempted to cross flooded roads, and one person has died from attempting to cross a flooded road on foot.

Residents are urged to use their common sense and drive to conditions.
