Help for abuse victims

Claudia Baxter

UP TO one in three women and one in five men will be sexually abused at some point in their lives - a statistic Phoenix House counsellor Katrina Holz hopes will soon become history.

"It's all about prevention. That's our ultimate goal," she said.

Mrs Holz said the not-for-profit Phoenix House was there to educate against sexual abuse and support those affected by it.

"We provide a 24-hour counselling service," she said.

"People can phone the sexual assault crisis line and that gets through to a Brisbane-based service that can refer to Phoenix House from there.

"If it's a rape, they can present at the base hospital and they will be asked if they if they want a sexual assault worker. We'll go to the hospital and be with them in whatever they go through. They can also contact police."
