Hep A scare recalls 1kg bags of Nanna's frozen berries

CONSUMERS are being advised to throw out a popular Nanna's product because of a link to hepatitis A.

The ABC reports 1kg packets of Nanna's Fresh Frozen Mixed Berry are being taken off Australian supermarket shelves following the scare.

The product is sold nationally, mainly in Coles, Woolworths and IGA supermarkets.

Reportedly the company is fully cooperating with the recall and the ABC said it has contacted them for comment.

News of the recall has spread quickly on social media with consumers responding with concern.

What is hepatitis A?

According to Hepatitis Australia, hepatitis A is:

  • A viral infection of the liver.
  • It is spread through the faecal-oral route or when infected faecal matter enters the mouth.
  • Symptoms can be debilitating but most people infected with hepatitis A recover completely.
  • Once you have had hepatitis A you cannot get it again.
  • Vaccination against hepatitis A is available.

Symptoms of hepatitis A

Symptoms of hepatitis A include:

  • fever;
  • weakness;
  • fatigue;
  • loss of appetite;
  • nausea;
  • joint aches and pains;
  • vomiting; and
  • jaundice (yellowish eyes and skin, dark urine and pale-coloured faeces).

The Hepatitis Australia website states: "Death because of hepatitis A infection is very rare.

"The likelihood of severe disease or death resulting from hepatitis A infection is much greater in people with pre-existing liver damage, including people with chronic liver disease due to hepatitis B or C, and people over 50 years of age."
