Heroes help 11-year-old

EMERALD firefighters yesterday brought a smile back to the face of an 11-year-old birthday boy who lost his Xbox and all of his birthday presents in a house fire on Tuesday.

Ryan Cross and his grandparents, Fred and Lynne Petersen, escaped unharmed with their pets on Tuesday afternoon, after a fire in the roof caused it to collapse and flames to engulf their home on Kythera Road.

The family was alerted to the fire by three loud bangs and an electrical burning smell before seeing flames in the evaporative cooler.
