Assessor arrives on Heron Island to inspect fire damage

THE situation on Heron Island remains unclear after the resort was evacuated following a fire in the generator room on Christmas night.

The 279 guests on the island at the time were transferred to Gladstone and, despite the resort's accommodation and public spaces including the restaurant, bar and meeting spaces escaping damage, the fire left the resort without water, power and sanitation services.

A spokeswoman for the resort said a team of assessors was headed for the island.

They were expected to be in place on Sunday to inspect the damage to the resort's generator.

She said management expected a full understanding of the damage to become clear within a couple of days.
