Men on cross for real Easter vigil

A HERVEY Bay church has shocked plenty of motorists this week with a confronting way to drive home the Easter message.

Holiday-makers and commuters have stopped to take photos of a man draped on a large cross, complete with crown of thorns and a dirt-smeared wrap.

The man is actually part of a tag team of churchgoers from the Hervey Bay Baptist Church who have been posing on the cross during peak hour this week.

While an air of gravity surrounded each man as they took to the cross, the venture also provoked laughter and smiles as the approach refreshed the serious themes of Easter for the faithful.

Pastor Ray Airosa said he saw it as a way to fire up young members of the church.

Some of the young men jumped at the idea to remind motorists what Easter was about.

“I wanted people to remember what Easter is all about,” he said.

The group of young men who have spent many hours posing on a large cross this week had no idea what reaction they would receive.

Pastor Ray Airosa came up with the idea and recruited 10 young men from the Hervey Bay Baptist Church to pose on the cross, which stands alone in a field facing the Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd.

Jesse Farrance was one of the young men who braved the recent wind and rain to climb the cross.

He has been with the church since his childhood, and saw the project as tough, but worthwhile.

Pastor Airosa believed it not only would give the boys a feeling of what it was like on the cross but also serve as a message to motorists.

Head Pastor Keith Stevenson said he would even give it a go before the project finished on Sunday.

“We see this as a visual way to remind people what the message of Easter is,” he said.
