Higginbotham's shoulder injury rules him out for season

THE Wallabies have been hit with a major blow ahead of the series with the British and Irish Lions, with star back-rower Scott Higginbotham ruled out for the rest of the year.

The Melbourne Rebel foward dislocated his shoulder in the defeat to the Reds on Saturday night and found out yesterday he would need a full shoulder reconstruction.

Scans carried out in Sydney revealed extensive ligament damage and he will have the shoulder operation back in Melbourne.

The rehabilitation timelines are such that he is not expected to be fit to return to play until the start of next year's Super Rugby competition.
