Hillary Clinton says sorry to Trump supporters

US PRESIDENTIAL candidate Hillary Clinton has apologised for insulting supporters of her rival Donald Trump.

On Friday the Democratic Party's candidate said half of Mr Trump's supporters belonged in a "basket of deplorables" of people who were "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic".

Speaking at an evening fundraiser in New York, Mrs Clinton (pictured) said Mr Trump had given voice to hateful rhetoric from such individuals through his behaviour as a candidate for the White House.

"Unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up," she said.

Mr Trump responded by saying the comment was "insulting" to "millions of amazing, hard-working people".

Apologising, Mrs Clinton said: "I was grossly generalistic and that's never a good idea. I regret saying half. That was wrong."
