CYBER crime detectives are urging the thousands of Australians on the receiving end of a disturbing "hitman" text message not to take the threats seriously.
At least 10,000 people have reported as having received the message which warns the phone holder they are about to be killed by a hitman if they don't transfer $5000 into an overseas account.
On Monday afternoon, Queensland Detective Superintendent Brian Hay said the text message was a scam and anyone who received it had nothing to fear and should simply hit the delete button.
"This is a very ugly attempt by fraudsters overseas to get your money," Det Supt Hay said
"There is no immediate danger or threat to you or your family".
Since Sunday, 000 operators have been inundated with calls about the text message and Det Supt said it remained to be seen just how many people had been affected.
He said anyone who received the message should report it to the ACCC or phone the Police Assistant Line on 131 444.
