Great groper! Kayak angler hooks onto rare monster

ONE man, one kayak, a fishing rod and 'a hectic fight' has led to one massive fish being caught.

Mackay man Kenneth Leigh Saunders will have a story for the ages, after hooking a rare Queensland Groper in the Pioneer River.

Mr Saunders used a game rod and reel, a 40cm mullet as his bait and a kayak to hook the monster fish.

"I hooked him while I was on the kayak, I got out of that (expletive) really quickly," he said.

A spokesman from the Mackay Recreational Fishing Alliance said that the catch was a lucky one.

"These fish were once very common, now not so much, there are also on the no take list," he said.

"Queensland Groper are commonly caught at the Gulf and are often this size."

Reactions:

Josh Kempin: That's f***ing unreal.

Tyson Geeves: I wonder if its the same one that fish that used to hang around the fish market jetty? They used to feed one down there.

Josh Geiger: Holy sh*t that's a Grouper.

Tyson Green: That's a monster mate, you would have got a few fillets from him.

Have you ever seen a groper this big? Can you beat this catch? Send in your photos: justin.vanheerden@dailymercury.com.au
