Hope that fuel costs won't soar

WHAT can Gympie drivers expect to pay at the bowsers with Brisbane fuel prices soaring on the eve of the September school holidays?

No one knows, but yesterday Gympie's prices averaged 147 cents per litre, well below inflated Brisbane prices - which RACQ spokesman Paul Turner has said there was no valid reason for except price gouging.

He said petrol companies had jumped at the chance to double their retail margins by 15 cents per litre ahead of the school holidays and were ripping off motorists.

Yesterday Brisbane prices averaged at $1.52 for unleaded, up from $1.38 in the 24-hour period directly ahead of the hike.

Prices at other stations jumped 20c a litre.

But Gympie prices, insulated from weekly price cycles, remained stable.

RACQ executive manager of public policy Michael Roth had previously told The Gympie Times that Gympie did not have the weekly fuel cycle that Brisbane and Sunshine Coast markets experienced.

Yesterday the cheapest unleaded fuel - 144.9 - was found at Woolworths and United service stations on the Bruce Hwy.

Gympie West and Devery's both were selling unleaded for 147.9 and the BP and Caltex servos on the highway were charging 148.9.

Mr Turner said Brisbane's prices were too high and the weekly price cycle had blown out over 11 days making it almost impossible for motorists to buy on a cheap day.

The last time prices were higher than $1.50 per litre was a result of unrest in the Middle East.

We can only hope Gympie prices do not follow suit.
