Horn last hope for boxing medal

QUEENSLANDER Jeff Horn took up boxing when he was 18.

Six years later, the light welterweight now finds himself as Australia's only hope of winning a medal in the men's competition in London.

Horn is Australia's lone quarter-finalist after a second round 17-11 win over Tunisian Abderrazk Houya.

He will face second-seeded Ukrainian and 2011 world champion Denys Berinchyk at 7.15am (AEST) on Thursday.

Berinchyk was pushed all the way by Sweden's Anthony Yigit in his bout, scraping through with a 24-23 win.

Australia has not won an Olympic boxing medal since Grahame Cheney, also a light welterweight, won silver in Seoul in 1988
