How one tackle forever changed Coast man's life

A LATE tackle during a game of rugby league has left a Sunshine Coast man with a knee injury so severe he is classed the same as a leg amputee.

Jayden Trace, who played for junior league for the Nambour Crushers and later for Maroochydore Rugby League Club, was injured during a game in Brisbane's university competition.

The late drop tackle saw him taken to Prince Charles Hospital for emergency treatment where it was revealed he had torn all but one of the ligaments in, and dislocated, his knee.

He was told by doctors at Sunshine Coast Private Hospital that he was "in the same class of injury as a leg amputee".

Jayden will never play rugby league again, and his chances of playing any sport are "slim and too risky".

"News has obviously shocked the family as everyone who knows Jayden would agree that rugby has been his life," Hellen Trace said.

"Jayden has played the game he loves most since the age of 5 and has lived his whole life living and breathing the game."

Hellen said Jayden's recovery had been plagued by clots, numbness and signs of drop-foot, which is a gait abnormality.

She said he was finding it hard to cope faced with a  long and expensive recovery process to give him the ability to walk again unsupported.

"Jayden has always been a fun kid that loves spending times with his family and friends however after the incident

"Life can always be a hard road, and Jayden is finding it very hard to cope, keeping in mind his future."

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help in Jayden's road to recovery.

All money raised will go towards physiotherapy, surgeries, doctors, any other ongoing medical costs and re-education expenses to help set Jayden up for the prospects of a job in the future.
