14 out of 15 kids are doing ice, says Mackay drug survey

AN ANONYMOUS survey conducted by Mackay youth organisation YIRS reveals the drug known as ice is "easy to buy on social media".

The survey was in response to Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen's Ice Forum, which is being held in Mackay today.

Mr Christensen said the results were "quite staggering".

"Fourteen out of the 15 young people who participated in the survey were either using or had tried ice," he said.

"They also pointed out it was 'easy to buy on social media'."

Mr Christensen said this really highlighted the seriousness of the problem and the need for action.

Respondents stated the drug was addictive, a serious problem in the community and said there was not enough education about its effects. They also outlined the changes they have seen in people who use methylamphetamines.

Do you think Mackay has an ice problem?

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

The response painted an ugly picture, Mr Christensen said.

The changes included paranoia, dehumanisation, insomnia, aggressive and violent behaviour towards friends and families, stealing, desperation, and sores on their face and arms.

"The other very disturbing point from this survey is that the drug is readily available through friends, dealers and on social media," he said.

Mr Christensen praised YIRS for its proactive engagement on the frontline of the fight against the ice epidemic.

About 40 people will attend the closed forum at 2pm. Feedback will be forwarded to the National Ice Taskforce to assist in the development of a national strategy.
