Kemp misses out on semi

MACKAY'S Rebecca Kemp has narrowly missed out on the semi-finals of the 200m women's breaststroke at the 14th FINA world championships in Shanghai, China.

Kemp swam a time of 2:29.82 in yesterday morning's heats.

Compatriot Sally Foster (2:27.07) qualified sixth- fastest behind American Rebecca Soni for last night's 200m breaststroke semi-finals.

Kemp's coach Pat Wright is on a coaches' education tour of China during the world championships.

“Very nervous and finished 23rd in the world, but is capable of a lot better with more experience,” she said of her 18-year-old prodigy.

Kemp's father Ray put his daughter's performance into perspective.

“It was her first open international meet,” he said.

“It was not her best swim ... regardless of that we are very proud of her.

“She is number 23 in the world.”

Ray said his daughter would take it on board and learn from the experience as she sets her sights on the Olympic trials in Adelaide.

“We are all positive,” he said.

Ray said he and his wife Ann would support their daughter 100% in her dream to represent Australia at next year's Olympic Games in London.
