Ingall back in driver’s seat at Bathurst

TWO decades after he won Bathurst with Larry Perkins, 51-year-old Russell Ingall will try to win this year's race with Perkins' son Jack.

The two-time winner (pictured), who saluted with Larry Perkins in 1993 and 1995, got a last-minute call-up after James Courtney was ruled out with rib and lung injuries sustained when he was hit in the chest by signage sent flying by a helicopter in a round of the V8 Supercars championship in Sydney in August.

Ingall also drove with Jack Perkins in last month's Sandown 500, the pair finishing ninth after an incident in qualifying saw them start from 24th on the grid.

The veteran said that effort had convinced him a podium finish this weekend was not out of the question.

"We're very confident. With everything that's happened, there's one thing that would put a smile on James' face - to see that #22 car on the podium," Ingall said.

"We're not here to mess around and fill a gap. The guys have gone to a lot of trouble to get this far - the preparation of the car - we're going to have a big stab at it."

Not surprisingly, Courtney said he was extremely disappointed to have to watch the great race, but said Ingall was a fantastic replacement driver.

"Of anyone I could've picked, it's good that he stepped up," Courtney said.

"I'm pumped. I don't how happy I'll be if he wins the thing on Sunday, but it'll be good."
