Inmate sentenced for supplying prescription drugs in jail

LEIGHTON Matthew O'Reilly was in jail and wanted to get off heroin so he asked his girlfriend to try and smuggle in a prescription drug used to treat addicts.

On Monday the 27-year-old father was jailed for supplying Subutex strips worth $10,000 to $26,000 within Woodford jail.

Brisbane District Court heard he was a known drug user and had previously committed drug offences in Bundaberg and Childers.

In March this year he organised for his girlfriend to try and smuggle about 33 strips containing the drug buprenorphine into the jail. The court heard he planned keep half and give the remainder to other inmates to sell.

The court heard his girlfriend tried to hide them in an orange balloon taped inside her jeans but surrendered it before being searched.

Judge Suzanne Sheridan was told O'Reilly had once been prescribed the drug, which people could purchase legally for less than $200.

In sentencing, Judge Sheridan noted O'Reilly had been clean for several months and told him it was vital he continued efforts to remain drug-free for himself and his 18-month-old daughter.

"She is the real motivating force to rid yourself of your heroin addiction," Judge Sheridan told O'Reilly.

Judge Sheridan said his offending threatened the rehabilitative process jail provided.

She also took into account O'Reilly's guilty plea, lengthy history of drug offences, cooperation with police and that it was not alleged he would commercially benefit from the crime.

O'Reilly was sentenced to 16 months jail with a parole release date fixed at February 12 next year. The 46 days he had spent in custody before sentencing was declared time served.
