The insane 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

THIS week for my blog, we will be looking at the insane 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

Over here in the USA where I am visiting, the Corvette has always been the sports car that provides great bang for your buck.

Yes, you read right. This Chevy has more power and torque than a Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Chevrolet claims that the gearbox shifts eight hundreds of a second quicker than Porsche's PDK double-clutch transmission, which is used in many models including the 918 Spyder hypercar.

The Corvette Z06 also has a kerb weight of just less than 1600 kilograms. To keep the weight as low as possible, the entire roof and bonnet are made from carbon fibre.

This also keeps the centre of gravity down low for a more planted feel.

Now with such a colossal amount of power you would assume that the 0-100 kph dash would be over pretty quick, and you would be correct. The exact figure is 3.0 seconds flat. That's right, it matches the much lighter Ferrari 458 Speciale and it is almost as quick as the more powerful and AWD Lamborghini Aventador.

The Corvette can well and truly hold its ground against supercar royalty.

In my opinion, the new C7 Corvette is a vast improvement over the previous generation C6 Corvette.

When you see it coming down the street from a distance and you see the daytime running LEDs and the aggressive front end, you squint and think, is that a Ferrari? Once it gets closer and you realise it's a Corvette, you can't help but to think what a great job the designers did.

It's not all just looks, though. It features fancy electronics including active rev-matching, which automatically pumps the throttle when you change gear to make for a perfect shift.

In the USA, the 2015 Corvette Z06 starts at just $78,000 USD, and compared to the $288,000 USD starting price for the 458 Speciale it sounds like a bargain to me.

The new C7 Corvette isn't being offered in Australia, but you can expect various companies to import a few and convert them to RHD for legal road use. You could expect to pay about $180,000 to $250,000 AUD.
