Inskip 'sink hole' pair return to drama scene

SANDY Brosnan was blown away when Inskip Point "sink hole” victim Jenny Gass popped into her Rainbow Beach fish and chips shop.

"I didn't expect to see you again,” Mrs Brosnan said in amazement.

Jenny and her husband Dieter last year became the first people in Australia to even suffer property damage from the kind of underwater landslide event which created a crisis for Rainbow Beach and closed off part the Inskip Point camping area.

Their vehicle and caravan are still on what one local called "a journey to the centre of the earth.”

The only reason Jenny and Dieter are not on the same journey is the alert loyalty of their little poodle, Georgie, who saved them, alerting Dieter to the fact that something strange was going on.

"I was asleep,” Jenny Gass said at the couple's Dorrigo camp ground site yesterday.

She was awakened by Dieter, who yesterday said he was alerted to the fact that something strange was going on, when their dog, Georgie, started to behave strangely.

"We're okay again now, Dieter said.

"Alliance Insurance were absolutely fantastic to us,” he said.

"We still lost around $30,000, including jewellery, irreplaceable personal belongings and all our cards.

"But we've been able to replace the car and the caravan.”

Jenny gave credit to Dieter for waking her as the hole in the beach relentlessly kept expanding, ultimately taking their caravan and vehicle.

Dieter passed the credit on to their miniature poodle Georgie, who raised the alarm.

"She wanted to go outside and when I looked out, the hole was only metres away and the sand was falling in in 1m to 1.5m wide clumps.

Dieter tried to save the caravan by towing it away, but soon found he could not save the car either.

Yesterday they said it would take more than disaster to keep them away from "the best place in Australia.”

They said local people added to the beauty of the place with their care and generosity.
