BINDI and Robert Irwin could barely contain themselves after they welcomed their first guests to Africa.

"I think it is one of my favourite places in the zoo," the seven-year-old beamed after being asked about what he thought of the exhibit featuring rhinos, giraffes, zebras and cheetahs.

"I was so excited," Bindi said.

"It is such an incredible day. We are really carrying on Dad's legacy."

An even more animated Robert, waving his arms around in exactly the same way his Dad would, said: "It is so good we will be carrying on in Dad's footsteps."

The seven-year-old has been to South Africa.

"I think Africa here is even better than Africa over there."

His mum and sister said it was a pretty decent endorsement for the new exhibit.

Terri said it had been no easy task bringing together rhinos, which can weigh up to 3600kg, with 1200kg giraffe and zebra weighing up to 450kg.

Even the youngest rhino, Savannah, who is only five months old after being born at the zoo in April, tops the scales at 350kg.

Terri revealed the zoo could soon be having more babies on the way with two of the giraffes going on their first date.

"Perhaps we will hear the pitter-patter of two metre long feet in a little while," she said.

Bindi later demonstrated her prowess in feeding one of the zoo's biggest crocodiles at the Crocoseum show.

Robert, who was famously held as a baby by his dad while Steve fed a crocodile, was kept well back from the beasts and any media who might have been 'stalking him'.
