Lawyers question royal commissioner appointment
A LAWYERS group has questioned whether former Northern Territory chief justice Brian Martin is the right person to be the Royal Commissioner leading the investigation into the NT juvenile detention system.
The Australian Lawyers Alliance said Mr Martin may not be the right person for the job, considering the high rates of incarceration of indigenous youth and adults, which the judiciary had played a part in.
"While Mr Martin has had a distinguished career and no doubt has insight into the NT justice system, it would have been preferable to draw upon the expertise and wisdom of a retired judicial officer without this connection to the NT," alliance spokesman Greg Barns said.
He also said it was essential the Royal Commission engaged with indigenous elders and youth justice experts.
