How drunk was Tony when he decided to knight Phil?

TONY, what were you thinking? Malcolm Turnbull must have clicked his designer shoes together and popped the cork on another bottle of Moet when his boss named Phil a Knight of the Realm.

Fair dinkum, did Mr Abbott have one too many on Australia Day to come up with that little pearler?

How can someone get two decisions so far apart in right and wrong?

Rosie Batty as Australian of the Year and the Prime Minister's support against domestic violence is commendable. Like mental health, the high-profile groups need to champion it.

But he followed with what has to be a brain explosion of mega proportions in granting Prince Philip's knighthood.

Have I missed something? Maybe Tony, like me, did the Duke of Edinburgh Award in his youth and wanted to thank him for that, unlike me who got lost and actually failed to complete the course but did get to shake hands with Phil anyway.

Before you tie me to a Union Jack and run me up the pole, I am a bit of a monarchist. I have no problem with our flag, and I would only ask for recognition of our traditional owners if we were to change it. For the record, I am keener on God Save the Queen than being girt by sea; but for Australia to start knighting members of the royal family is bizarre.

If Tony's criterion was let's hand out a knighthood to someone known for a bizarre sense of humour and the ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time, well Phil is his and maybe I'm a chance.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not against the idea of handing out damehoods and knighthoods. But at least get it right and maybe start with some Australians. There have been some wonderful Australians doing great things like medical research, charity, sport etc who deserve a gong before Phil.

I can think of two on the Sunshine Coast, the late Dr June Canavan for what she has done for humanity and Roy Thompson for his contribution to the community, particularly the chopper rescue service and of course countless other outstanding human beings who have contributed above and beyond.

Can't wait for next year, maybe Tony will knight President Obama - Sir Barack has a certain ring.
