Italian rules waves

ITALIAN surfer Leonardo Fioravanti won the inaugural Skullcandy Oz Grom Open 16-years-and-under division at Lennox Head yesterday.

Fioravanti scored a 9.25 and 8.0 (out of a possible 10) in the final to get past Lennox Head surfer and competition favourite Mikey Wright.

It was a fitting end to the five-day event, with the Italian pocketing $1000 prizemoney.

"I struggled early in the final but I was lucky to get a couple of waves when it counted," Fioravanti said.

"It was a really good competition and I got to surf against some kids I've never come up against before.

"I've been staying with Mikey and we're really good friends, so I was glad I came up against him in the final."

North Stradbroke Island surfer Ethan Ewing waited until his final wave to snatch victory in the 14-years-and-under final. He posted the highest wave score of the competition with an impressive 9.9.

Coolum surfer Isabella Nichols won the 16-years-and-under girls' division and New Zealand's Kehu Butler overcame local favourite Kyuss King in the 12-years-and-under boys' final.

"It's been an unbelievable event and we couldn't have asked for anything more," event organiser Tony O'Brien said. "It went down to the wire in every division and we had decent swell for most of the competition.

"We had 10 weeks to organise it and I think we've really set the bar high for junior surfing."

Skullcandy has committed to the event in Lennox Head for another two years.
