It’s on for Young as protege steps up for Brisbane Roar

BRISBANE Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young has happily preached a common sporting cliche as he prepares to play his first game of the 2015/16 A-League season against the Phoenix in Wellington this afternoon.

"The old saying 'a week is a long time in football' - there's certainly evidence of that here," Young said.

That is because Young will play in place of regular custodian Michael Theo in the Westpac Stadium clash, with Theo straining his quad muscle against the Mariners in the 2-1 win last Sunday.

Roar coaching staff are hopeful Theo will return against Adelaide United at Suncorp Stadium next Saturday night.

Young - who was once a protege of former Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers at Reading - said he would gladly take any opportunity that presented itself.

"It's important to work hard no matter what - if you're playing or not playing," he said.

Roar coach John Aloisi said he was blessed to have two high-quality glovemen competing so hard for the one spot in his team.

"I've said it all pre-season - we're lucky to have two great goalkeepers," he said.

"Jamie will slot in and I'm sure he'll do a great job because he's been training really well."

Young admitted a Phoenix attack containing Roly Bonevacia, Roy Krishna and Michael McGlinchey would be tough to keep at bay.
"They will be a strong team with good players; well organised," he said. "But there's no reason why we can't acquit ourselves well."
