Jaguar confirms $107,000 F-Type four-cylinder sports car

ENTRY to the Jaguar F-Type club has just got cheaper, but you're still asked to part with six figures to join in the fun.

Confirmation has arrived that Australia will receive Jaguar's stunning Coupe and Convertible sports car in entry-level four-cylinder guise, with prices starting from $107,300 before on-road costs.  

Costs for all the four-cylinder models in the range are yet to be confirmed ahead of the car's arrival Down Under, set to be the final quarter of this year.  

While not as hairy-chested as the 250kW/280kW/294kW supercharged 3.0-litre V6s or 404kW/423kW supercharged 5.0-litre V8s found in the current F-Type line-up, the new turbocharged four-pot is no slouch.

With 221kW and 400Nm on tap the 2.0-litre is the most powerful four-cylinder ever in production by Jaguar, and the British car maker promises a 0-100kmh time of 5.7 seconds and top speed of 249kmh.

And not only will the new four-cylinder F-Type be about $12k cheaper than the 250kW V6 version, it will use more than 16% less fuel.   

Jaguar says the new model hass a weight reduction of 52kg and that "bespoke chassis tuning delivers greater agility," while the intake and exhaust have been "meticulously tuned to deliver the renowned F-Type sound."  

If the new four-pot can match its larger displacement stablemates in the aural excitement department it will be quite the achievement, so here's hoping the engineers have worked wonders.  

Sadly it appears no manual gearbox will be offered on the new four-cylinder F-Type, Jaguar instead bringing the new car to market only with the brand's eight-speed Quickshift automatic.

All MY2018 F-Types will receive facelifts, with redesigned bumpers and full LED headlights. The four-cylinder cars will have just a single tailpipe jutting out of the rear bumper to distinguish it from the twin central exhausts on V6 cars and the unmissable quad outboard exhausts on the V8s.

New F-Types also score a wider range of driver assistance systems, including an integrated forward-facing stereo camera. This offers autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and driver condition monitor. It's unclear if the latter picks up on the grin on the driver's face when they prod the loud pedal on this Jag F-Type.  

So has the F-Type gone soft with the four-cylinder, catering to the cruising rather than sporting Jaguar buyer? Not so said Ron Lee from Jaguar's powertrain department.  

"Not only is this the most powerful four-cylinder ever offered in a production Jaguar, it also develops the highest specific power and torque ratings of any engine in the F-Type range," he said. "It's a natural fit for a Jaguar sports car."
