JAMIE Oliver's first Australian Ministry of Food school has been opened in Ipswich.

The cosy Queenslander-styled space will host basic cooking lessons for residents in the hope of positively influencing eating habits.

Mr Oliver's Australian chef mate and the ambassador for the Ministry, Ben O'Donoghue, was present at Thursday's launch, along with Premier Anna Bligh.

More than 1200 people have already expressed interest in taking part in the cooking lessons.

Live cooking demonstrations will be held at the Ipswich Ministry of Food on Friday and Saturday.
