Jaws of life free elderly woman

FIREFIGHTERS worked for 20 minutes to free an elderly woman from a damaged vehicle after a crash at Torquay on Saturday.

The 81-year-old and a second elderly driver were taken to hospital following the two car collision on Truro St about 9.45am.

Police were yesterday still investigating the cause of the crash, which saw a Mitsubishi Lancer and a Honda Jazz collide near the Ann St intersection.

Firefighters from Torquay station arrived at the scene within minutes of the crash and used hydraulic rescue equipment to remove the doors from the Mitsubishi.

It took about 20 minutes before the driver could be freed and taken to the Hervey Bay Hospital.

It is understood she suffered minor injuries, as did the driver of the Honda, a 78-year-old woman who was also transported to hospital by ambulance.

Police directed traffic around the crash, which saw the Honda propelled onto a nearby grass verge.

Emergency crews remained at the scene for more than an hour until the roadway was cleared for traffic.
