Jayant Patel returns to Brisbane court

FORMER Bundaberg surgeon Dr Jayant Patel has returned to court for the second time after a jury was unable to reach a verdict in his trial for grievous bodily harm earlier this month.

Dr Patel was not required to speak during a brief hearing in the Brisbane District Court.

Patel's defence team said it intended to make further submissions over the matter.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has not indicated whether the crown would pursue another trial against Dr Patel.

Earlier this month, Dr Patel faced trial accused of unnecessarily removing the large bowel of patient Ian Vowles in 2004.

However, the jury was discharged after it was unable to reach a verdict.

Patel is due to return to Brisbane District Court again on November 8.

He is also facing further charges in the Brisbane Supreme Court.
