Watson's life adapted to big screen
JESSICA Watson's sailing feat scored her a spot on the small screen and now her story is set to be immortalised on the big screen in a movie adaptation of her life.
True Spirit, due for release in late 2013 and to be filmed in Sydney and the Gold Coast, will be made by the same production team that brought Soul Surfer, the biopic of Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack, to the big screen.
American producer David Brookwell said he had followed Watson's inspirational journey with interest and believed it would make a great inspirational family film.
At 16, Watson was the youngest woman to unofficially circumnavigate the globe solo and unassisted.
Now 19, Watson told the crowd at the Australian International Movie Convention held on Monday at the Gold Coast, that the prospect of having someone else play her was a very strange idea.
She said she expressed initial reservations to be involved with the project but had found the film on Hamilton inspiring and agreed to be a consultant on the film.
"It's quite surreal but I'm really looking forward to doing my part to make it as accurate as possible," Watson was reported as saying at the Movie Convention.
"I want to share it all with whoever they choose because that will help get the story across.
"It's not stuff that you openly talk about all the time.
"It's been a couple of years so I have closed a lot of those emotions up and I am looking forward to opening them again."
The lead role at this stage is likely to go to an unknown Australian.
