Jessie J snags Mackay singer Aaliyah Warren on The Voice
MAKING Jessie J frown sounds like it would be a bad thing.
But it got Mackay singer Aaliyah Warren on to The Voice Australia last night.
The 17-year-old Mackay North State High School graduate is now part of Team Jessie on the reality singing show after impressing the notoriously picky superstar coach.
"She said when she frowns that means she likes something," Aaliyah told the Mercury.
"It was a bit of a blur. I didn't perform it as well as I practised it because I was so nervous but I just tried my hardest the whole way through."
While Aaliyah wasn't completely satisfied with her performance of Runnin' (Lose It All) by Beyoncé, it was enough to catch chart-topper Jessie J's ear.
"What I liked was the fight. The ending was way better than where you started," Jessie J said last night.
"It just goes to show when you push away from your comfort zone that's when you find those special moments. That's what I want to do with you. I want to find things in your voice that you haven't discovered yet."
Joel and Benji Madden also pitched for Aaliyah, but Jessie J won her over with a confident pitch.
"She just sounded like she really understood me and I knew in my heart she'd teach me things I'd need to know," Aaliyah said.
"She's a really hard worker. I'm not taking anything away from the Maddens, but they're really laid back and I'm really laid back as well. I didn't think that would be very good for me. I need someone who will really push me."
Aaliyah will next be seen performing in the battle round, where she'll have to compete against a teammate to remain on Team Jessie and advance to the live shows.
