FOOTBALL: Newcastle Jets have confirmed the sacking of manager Mark Jones following their loss to Sydney FC on Saturday night.

The 2-0 result confirmed Sydney FC as A-League history makers, but handed the Jets an unwanted wooden spoon after an incredible late season collapse.

Newcastle had been on track to finish in the top six, before conceding 19 goals without scoring in a 10 game winless run.

Yesterday, Newcastle confirmed his exit, with senior assistant coach Clayton Zane to take charge of training until the players break for annual leave next month.

"Newcastle Jets can advise that the Club has today parted ways with Head Coach Mark Jones, effective immediately," the official statement read.

"Jones was appointed as head coach of the club in September 2016, however, after finishing bottom of the Hyundai A-League standings this campaign, the club's ownership and senior management will make a fresh appointment for the 2017/18 season.

"The club will commence its 2017 pre-season in late June. It is intended that a new head coach will be in place before this time."

Jones took charge of Newcastle just weeks before the start of the A-League season following the shock sacking of former manager Scott Miller.

Jones had aimed to end a lengthy stretch without finals football for the club, which hasn't finished in the top six since winning the title in 2008.

Newcastle has already confirmed the signing of Melbourne Victory defender Daniel Georgievski, while Central Coast Mariners striker Roy O'Donovan and Tunisian winger Fahid Ben Khalfallah are rumoured to be heading to the Hunter.
