AUSTRALIAN Leisel Jones' fairytale for one final shot at individual Olympic glory has fallen short with the superstar finishing fifth in the women's 100 metre breaststroke.

Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte was the worthy winner, holding off the fast finishing Rebecca Soni.

But further back in the field, one of Australia's greatest Olympians was trying to finish as strongly as she could, knowing the sun was setting on her glorious career.

"My focus has totally changed," Jones said happily.

"For me (this Olympics) was about changing of the guard ... and its all about the younger guys now.

"I've enjoyed every minute of (her career)."

Jones touched the wall with the time of 1:06.95.
