GYMNASTICS: It may have been Chiara Spiccia's first time at the Junior State Championships in Brisbane but the determined gymnast was aiming for nothing less than high scores.

Coach Sue Fehlhaber said the Level 4 under-11 gymnast was up against 80 competitors but she held her nerve.

"Chiara achieved her goal of obtaining above nine out of 10 on floor,” Fehlhaber said.

"She received a score of 9.150 placing her 36th on floor.

"This was her highest score for this apparatus for the 2017 season.

"It was an awesome job by Chiara at her first state championships and the club is sure it won't be her last.”

Also on debut at the state championships was Level 4 U12 gymnast Tayla Graham who came home seventh overall after placing fourth on vault, 14th on balance beam, and 15th on floor.

"Tayla has long days three times a week as she lives at the Gemfields,” Fehlhaber said.

"She travels in to school and then attends training for three hours and then travels back home.

"This is a true testament to her commitment and love of the sport and her results at this comp were exceptional.”

Competing at his second state championships, Level 3 Open gymnast Ryan Alexander placed 44th out of 77 competitors.

"He improved his score on four of the six apparatus and matched his scores from last year on the other two... he stepped up to the mark and did the club proud,” she said.

Gymnasts are now in training for the club's upcoming championships on October 14-15.
