CAMPAIGNING for the Queensland election was in full swing at Coolangatta for one political party on Saturday.

North Queensland federal member Bob Katter was at the beach to introduce Katter's Australian Party's southern Gold Coast candidates.

"This was old country party area. It is an area that has significant hostility towards Brisbane," Mr Katter said.

Mr Katter said the party had high hopes because people were disenfranchised with the system and the party's candidates were 'absolutely fabulous'.

"You have to remember I have been putting candidate together for more than half of my life," he said.

"They are not party functionaries. Not a single candidate here could be remotely describer as a political opportunist or career politician."

Currumbin candidate Steve Bowman was a mechanic from Currumbin who said public transport for the southern Gold Coast and cutting red tape for small business was high on his agenda.

"Public transport is a real issue as far as light rail and heavy rail and we need to fast track that and get it happening," Mr Bowman said.

"If you want to come here (Coolangatta) from Melbourne brilliant, but if you want to come here from Burleigh well you might have to walk because the buses are not that great.

"We have got a university at the airport that in three years it will have 10,000 students and no way to get there unless they come from Melbourne."

Mr Katter ended his visit to Coolangatta with a carol and a video Christmas message and carol.
