IF CASSIUS was human he would probably be wondering what he had done to deserve being shoved in a box the size of a ream of paper, taped up and left abandoned out the front of the Shaw's Veterinary Clinic in Ballina.

The empty box was discovered by veterinarian Dr Ros Fitzgerald early Friday morning.

The three-month-old tabby had managed to escape during the night and was discovered by a neighbour, who looked after him until Dr Fitzgerald arrived.

Dr Fitzgerald said as soon as she saw the box, she knew exactly what had happened.

"If he had been sitting there, he could have starved or suffocated," she said. "It is a gutless way of doing it."

With 34 years' experience as a vet, Dr Fitzgerald said coming across abandoned animals was not uncommon, although it was not something she had seen in Ballina in the year she had been working there.

Cassius is now safe and sound with Northern Rivers Animal Service (NRAS) volunteer Michela Brown, who said the little kitten was very lucky to have escaped the box and not been hit by a car.

"I honestly couldn't believe it," Ms Brown said. "Why such a small box? Was it all they had? What the hell were they thinking?"

"If a dog had of come along, he could have been mauled."
