Korean jailed for rape

THE Brisbane District Court yesterday jailed a Korean tourist who choked and raped a woman in Emerald in 2009.

Deokhawn Cha, 30, was in Australia on a work visa and met the woman, also 30, on a social website promoting work for Koreans.

Southern media reported Cha bought the woman to Emerald from Gin Gin where they stayed at a caravan park and camped in a two-person tent.

On the day of the offence, Cha drove the woman to a remote area outside Emerald and sexually assaulted her when she refused his request for sex.

He then placed his hands around her throat before driving the woman to bushland where she was raped.

Cha was arrested in the Queen Street Mall, Brisbane, attempting to sell some of the $650 in property he had stolen from an Emerald residence.

Cha pleaded guilty to 11 charges including rape and was jailed for nine-and-a-half years.

He had been previously convicted of rape and serious sexual assaults in Korea.
