Landry accuses Labor leader of trying to ‘frighten’ Aussies

MEMBER for Capricornia Michelle Landry has accused Opposition Leader Bill Shorten of being "a scaredy cat" for his GST comments.

"No decision has been made about any change to the rate of GST," she said.

"The government is involved in good faith discussions with the states and territories on how we can improve our tax system.

"We need the right tax system to generate growth and people want a tax system that will back them."

She accused the Labor leader of having no vision for Australia's future, while also dismissing Mr Shorten's claim that CQU would lose millions over the next four years."The Education and Training Minister Simon Birmingham is consulting the sector, students, parents and colleagues about reforms for the higher education sector," she said.

"We are looking at all the options on the table.

"When they were in government, Labor announced around $6.6 billion in cuts to universities.

"In government, they announced a HECS subsidy scheme for students then axed it because it didn't work. Mr Shorten is promising to introduce the same failed scheme but can't get the figures right."

On the mining sector, Ms Landry accused Mr Shorten of being beholden to the Greens.

"While I am concerned about the environment, I'm also concerned about jobs for Central Queensland families," she said.

"I absolutely support development of Abbott Point and other coal-related projects. On agriculture, she said it was "laughable" for Labor to say they are interested in the industry.

"This is the party that banned live exports of cattle and caused heartbreak and chaos in the northern Australian cattle industry.

"My continued lobbying of my Federal Government colleagues for Eden Bann Weir and Rookwood Weir is generating strong support.

"Mr Shorten (yesterday) refused to support these two vital agriculture infrastructure projects."
