Labor points big guns at Coast post budget reply

SHADOW Minister for Cities, Tourism and Transport and Infrastructure Anthony Albanese will visit the Sunshine Coast later this month as Labor looks to capitalise on Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's budget reply as Australia moves into federal election campaign mode.

Mr Albanese will be in Fisher on May 22 to support candidate Bill Gissane's campaign.

The Labor candidate said Mr Albanese would drive up the Bruce Highway from Brisbane at 4.30pm to see the issues first hand.

Mr Gissane said it was an opportunity to raise the profile of the Bruce Highway duplication and other infrastructure projects including the north coast rail duplication.

Mr Albanese's visit will be preceded by an appearance at Maleny Community Centre from 6.30pm on May 16 of Dr Andrew Leigh, the Labor member for Fraser, who is arguably one of the brightest members of parliament.

The economist, academic and solicitor holds a Masters of Public Administration and Doctorate of Philosophy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in the US.

Dr Leigh will present a post-budget analysis to the Coast's hinterland Labor branch.

Mr Gissane said Bill Shorten's budget reply speech reflected the 18 months of policy development Labor had undertaken.

"It was well researched, well received and makes sense,'' he said.

"It will bolster confidence in change in Fisher Fisher and adjoining seats.''

Mr Gissane said the Sunshine Coast would benefit from Labor's alternative budget through the reinvigoration of TAFE, restored funding for health, the boost to education in line with the Gonski reforms and through a commitment to source 50% of Australia's energy needs from renewables by 2030.

He said the University of the Sunshine Coast had the potential to become a world centre of excellence for renewable energy testing through cost-benefit analysis scaled-up suburban level technology.
