Labor tipped to lose Qld seats

JULIA Gillard is asking voters of Queensland and NSW not to punish her for the sins of the States but her pleas may be in vain, as punters are now predicting that Labor will lose four or five Queensland seats at Saturday’s poll.

As Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan opened a market today on how many seats Labor would lose in Queensland, he said that punters see the Bligh Government as a significant handicap on Julia Gillard’s campaign for re-election.

“Punters don’t think voters will differentiate between the government of Anna Bligh and the Rudd/Gillard government at the polling booth and they’re predicting that Labor will lose four seats, which is the favourite option paying $2.25,” said Mr Sullivan.

“It looks like Leichhardt, Dawson, Flynn and Herbert are nearly as good as gone while Forde and maybe even Longman and Petrie are in danger of going.”

The market will count the net loss from current sitting Labor members in Queensland, and has the loss of four seats of a possible 15 as the favourite option at $2.25. Punters can get $3.00 on a loss of five seats, $5.00 on a loss of three seats and $5.50 on six.

“From our existing market on Labor losses in NSW, we know that the performance of state governments in NSW, Queensland and even Victoria will have an effect on the federal election outcome,” said Mr Sullivan.

“The good news for Ms Gillard is the swing isn’t being repeated across the entire country and we still have the Government $1.28 to be returned while the Coalition are distinct outsiders at $3.60.”

Sportingbet Australia will pay out on net loss from the 15 current sitting Labor members in Queensland. The market does not include seats that are notionally Labor following the redistribution of electoral boundaries.
