Late night storm puts on lightning show for Sunshine Coast

THOUSANDS of lightning strikes were recorded across south east Queensland as thunderstorms rolled in after a sweltering day.

Energex recorded nearly 7000 lightning strikes in half an hour band some of the Sunshine Coast's keen photographers were waiting to capture the moment.

Jason Hay said the storm cell "stayed put" late last night as lightning lit up the sky.

"It was the storm cell where the 'cloud of lighting' just kept charging itself over and over for a million strikes, within its own cloud," he said.

"(It was an) amazing spectacle that went for a long time."

Storms brought heavy rain to Bundaberg and Cape Moreton but Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said it was mainly a light show for the Sunshine Coast.

"There was lots of lighting but the storms didn't have great structure and didn't produce that much rainfall for the Sunshine Coast," he said.

He said more rain was on the way for the Coast tonight.

"Overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning we'll have rain that will clear up in the afternoon and evening on Wednesday," he said.

"We're likely to see showers and thunderstorms move through the region before that south-easterly change kicks in early on Thursday and conditions become more stable."
