AT LEAST 60 people are believed to have been killed after a train, the Patna-Indore Express, derailed in India.

Al Jazeera reported another 150 people were injured when several carriages were thrown off the tracks as the train was travelling through northern Uttar Pradesh.

Reporter Faiz Jamil said the crash happened about 3am.

India's Ministry of Railways tweeted that strict action would be taken against those that might be responsible for the crash.

The Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu said an enquiry would be launched into the crash immediately.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to social media to issue a public statement.

He said he was anguished beyond words at the loss of lives.

"My thoughts are with the bereaved families," he said.
