Legacy issues still playing on Obama’s mind

BARACK Obama will look to shore up his legacy and appeal to American voters to put another Democrat in the White House in his final State of the Union address today.

While incumbents usually use the speech to appeal to Congress to help pass major reforms, Mr Obama is expected to focus on issues close to his heart - such as immigration, climate change and closing down Guantanamo Bay.

It comes just a week after President Obama's use of his executive powers to strengthen gun regulations in the face of fierce Republican opposition in Congress.

The President is also expected to appeal to voters to endorse wider economic reforms and democratic engagement, and argue the case that those goals will be delivered only if another Democrat takes over the reins in the White House after the November election.
