OPINION: Hervey Bay needs to be aware of legionella

LEGIONELLA is a huge problem for health facilities - not just in Hervey Bay, but globally.

There is a coincidence in that it has occurred twice at Hervey Bay, but that does not necessarily mean there is a correlation.

It's been caught at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane earlier this month, then at Princess Alexandra hospital, and was found at Charleville Hospital in March last year - and that's just in Queensland, in the past year.

Several years ago it was also found at Logan, Ipswich, Gold Coast and QEII hospitals in quick succession.

The reason that it is detected in these health facilities is simply because they test for it regularly. But just because it's not a problem unique to Hervey Bay Hospital, that does not mean the issue should be swept under the carpet.

It is a serious health concern, particularly for people with compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients.

In a hospital, that can spell disaster.

People need to be alert to the risks if they have been near water at that facility.

Given the problem has recurred in two different systems at the hospital in such a short time span, investigation is needed to rule out anything sinister in our water supply.
