Mountain biker wants new track for the Central Highlands

BRUCE Williamson is looking for mountain bikers in the Central Highlands who are interested in creating a track in Emerald.

Williamson, who has been mountain biking for more than 20 years, recently moved from the Gold Coast and wants to see a track established in the region.

"I see a lot of people riding mountain bikes around but there's not a lot of places for people to ride," he said.

"I just want to see if people are interested… see if we can get anything started."

Williamson said volunteers could help build cost effective tracks which have low impact on the environment.

He said the ideal track would link the two weirs.

"If designed correctly to IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) standard, they're low in maintenance," he said.

Williamson has some experience in creating mountain bike tracks, having helped build one at the Nerang National Park.

"It is a good activity - mountain biking is the fourth most popular sport in Australia," he said.

"More bikes are sold each year than cars. It's a real good exercise sport and lots of fun."
