Let's start a new challenge to buy in Gladstone

Wednesday, with JENNY GROTHER

A FEW years ago a fad started on Facebook. A person would post an absurd statement. As their friends responded to that statement, they would be "caught" and, as punishment, have to post another (usually) inane statement on their page.

The "game" was to raise awareness for breast cancer. I could not see the link between the game and breast cancer so I refused to play. Instead, I suggested that as punishment for falling for the stupidity of the comment the prey should have to make a donation towards cancer research.

If anyone needs to be made aware of the pain and suffering to victims of breast cancer I would suggest they return to the rock under which they have been living.

The "ice bucket challenge" started in 2014. The challenge involved being filmed while a bucket of iced water was poured over your head.

The game was a fundraiser for motor neurone disease that helped to raise more than $3 million for research in Australia and hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide.

I am going to start a new fad. This challenge does not involve silly statements or lies - or iced water. I do not do iced water. It involves taking a positive action-based step towards shopping locally.

Instead of telling people you are getting married, have won $900 on lotto or are sliding up and down the kitchen floor in your unicorn costume, you tell people you are going to change one of your shopping habits.

It could be something like, "I am going to buy my fruit and vegetables from a small local business". If your friends feel they want to make this change, too, they comment to join the thread.

The difference is this is not a game. It involves no punishment. The reward will be you get better quality fruit and vegetables at a better price.
