Lifeline for rescue chopper
XSTRATA Coal continues to support the Central Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service through a donation to the 24-hour emergency rescue service.
As a long-term sponsor of CQ Rescue, Xstrata Coal has donated $125,000 in 2011 to ensure the service continues its important work in critical emergency situations in remote Queensland communities.
Based in Mackay, CQ Rescue plays a vital role in providing rapid medical assistance to those in need by flying doctors, ambulance officers and paramedics directly to patients across Central Queensland.
When necessary, the service delivers patients to hospital intensive care units throughout the region.
General manager for CQ Rescue Phillip Dowler said since the inaugural rescue mission in 1996, the service had flown around 4500 missions in an area spanning the mining towns of the Bowen Basin region.
"Our primary function is to transport critically injured patients to regional hospitals," Mr Dowler said.
"Xstrata Coal's generous and ongoing support will go a long way to ensuring that we can continue to make a difference in critical and death situations."
Most of the funding towards CQ Rescue is through voluntary corporate sponsorship.
"It is fantastic that these companies get behind the rescue services in our region," Mr Dowler said.
The funding provided is also used to assist in the training costs of a new flight paramedic, the replacement of rescue equipment and to assist in purchasing fuel.
