Lightning players press claims for Australian selection

NETBALL: Sunshine Coast coach Noeline Taurua says Australian selectors have some "big decisions" to make after some of her charges pressed their claims in the Super Netball grand final at Brisbane on Saturday night.

The Lightning capped its dream maiden season in the national league with a 65-48 demolition of Giants and several of the side's players raised eyebrows.

Established representative shooter Caitlin Bassett continued her fine form with a 96% conversion rate (49 from 51) while goal attack Stephanie Wood is poised to add to her two caps after another strong display.

"I thought she was outstanding," Taurua said. "She definitely controlled the attacking end. (She) was sassy in her moves and very smart."

"She had a great balance of offloading or taking the shot herself (16 from 20) and I thought she provided a lot of momentum."

But it was the likes of centre Laura Scherian and wing attack Kelsey Browne who could force their way into the Australian set-up.

The duo became prominent players this year and made impacts in the decider.

"They (selectors) have got some hard decisions or big decisions to make," Taurua said.

"They're thinking of Comm Games (next year) plus worlds and the balance of the experienced ones who have been in that scene or looking at the Scherians and Kelsey Brownes as up-and-comers.

"They played really well out there and I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions.

"If they can perform in grand finals then the door is open and I think they've put their foot through it and now it's up to selectors to actually choose them."

National selectors were due to have an initial meeting on Sunday but will have more time to finalise the squad, with an announcement next week.
