THE revised Alfa Romeo Giulietta has arrived, starting from less than $30,000 plus on-roads.

Available in three trim levels - Progression, Distinctive and the Quadrifoglio Verde hot hatch - it comes with a choice of three engines, being a 1.4-litre, 88kW turbo petrol (Progression), 1.4-litre 125kW MultiJet turbo petrol (Distinction) and the 177kW turbo petrol (QV, manual generates 173kW).

The latter is the same powerplant found in the just-launched 4C coupe, lauded as the best sports car under $100,000.

Gone is the entry-level 1.4-litre petrol variant as well as the diesel option from the Progressive and Distinctive trim levels.

Upgrades include leather seats (Distinctive), new 12.7cm or 16.5cm infotainment screen, new steering wheel featuring the Alfa Romeo "Shield" and equipped with wheel-mounted controls, dual zone automatic climate control with rear ducts and chrome side window surrounds.

Alfa has also extensively revised the sound insulation, which the marque says now provides a quieter and more relaxed driving environment.

Basic equipment includes cruise control, 16-inch five twin-spoke alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, automatic windscreen wipers, leather wrapped steering wheel, LED daytime running lights, the Alfa Romeo DNA system, which enables you to choose the driving style, and six airbags.

Jump up to Distinctive and it gains rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats with electrical adjustment and driver's-side memory function, electric folding side mirrors, front fog lights and dual-zone air-con.

The QV gets all the cool sporting additions, including tinted glass from the rear of the B-pillar, larger 18-inch five-disc alloys, dark interior trim, Bose nine-speaker audio system, leather-and-Alcantara seat trim with white and green stitching, side skirts, red brake calipers, sports suspension and the larger U Connect touch-screen.

A five-star safety rating carries over.
