UPDATE: The Cutters not only needed to win their last three games of the season to make finals, they also needed Souths Logan Magpies to lose their last three.

However, after going down to Burleigh Bears at the weekend, all hopes of a Cutters' finals berth have been dashed.

Coach Steve Sheppard is disappointed by the loss but optimistic about the future of the side.

He will be trying to keep the group together as much as possible for next season.

"I think they have done a fantastic job, they can play against anyone in the competition," Sheppard said.

"We've learnt a bit and will start next pre-season bigger and stronger."

Sheppard said the effort was there against the Bears, but the Cutters struggled to execute.

"I thought we prepared pretty well actually, we just couldn't get rhythm in the pack," he said.

"We had enough opportunity in the second half to put a few tries on, we just couldn't execute under pressure."

Now, Sheppard said, the Cutters will turn their attention to finishing the year strongly, starting with Ipswich Jets next weekend.

"I'm quite happy with how the season went from where we started to where we'll finish up," he said.

"You can only ask the boys to put in effort each week. We'll be alright, We'll hang tight and focus on Ipswich now."

He will also be looking to re-sign some key players over the next week or so.

"We have been planning stuff underneath everything for the last few weeks," he said.

INITIAL: The QCCS Mackay Cutters have just lost their lead to the Burleigh Bears at the end of the first half.

A converted try from the Bears put them in front 16-12.

Braden Uele scored the first two tries for the Cutters, both converted nicely by acting captain Jack Joass.

History is not on the Cutters' side this game - their last win at Pizzey Park was back in 2013.

But the Mackay team have remained undefeated in their last four match ups, winning three and drawing with top of the table, PNG Hunters.
